March 21 SHW Meeting - Sluggish and Stuck Fermentations

Can you recognize a stuck fermentation (no measurable movement a la hydrometer) or is it just slow? Join us at the March 21 general meeting when Michael Jones, fermentation specialist with Scott Laboratories and home winemaker, will be presenting on the pesky problems associated with slow, sluggish, and stuck fermentations. Discussions will ensue on how to prevent under performance and ways to get your fermentation back on track.

Michael will provide some experienced insight and explanations on the how and whys of fixing some of these issues encountered during fermentation. So, bring your questions and observations.

Club glasses are available for guests; please remember to bring a wine glass for your use, and a bottle of wine to share (optional). Thanks to all for helping set up before the meeting. We need to vacate the meeting room by 9:30 PM and your help in facilitating the cleanup is appreciated.

February 15 SHW Meeting - Evaluation of 2011 White and Rose Wines

This month's general meeting is the evaluation of new (made in 2011) white and rose wines and the evening's guest evaluator is Jonathan Pack of Fair Play who also evaluated the Club's white and rose last year. Jonathan was most recently a winemaker for Perry Creek Winery and now has a wine consulting enterprise, jpwineconsulting. Jonathan's evaluations were very well received last year, and I am sure will be on the mark again.

Please bring 2 wine glasses for your use during the evaluations. Club glasses are available for guests and new members. Thanks to all for helping set up before the meeting. We need to vacate the meeting room by 9:30 PM and your help in facilitating the clean‐up is appreciated.

January 18, 2012 Program - Making Wine: As Natural As it Gets

Please join us on January 18 for a thought provoking evening. This month's guest speaker is John Munch, founder, partner and winemaker for Le Cuvier Winery in Paso Robles. As with most winemakers, John's an independent rogue who dances to a different drummer. John will be providing insight into his unique style of winemaking that will blow up the wine making boxes that we comfortably reside in as John does not use sulfites in his wine making processes. Plus, he prefers to use natural yeasts and has his own definition of a "racking schedule".

And, did we mention that his wines have a cult following and are almost always sold out? John will share with us some barrel samples– these will surely provoke our sensories! Come with 2 wine glasses and the expectation of an evening filled with a very interesting exchange of wine making ideas and methods.

Meeting starts at 7 PM, upstairs at the Turn Verein located at 3349 J Street in midtown Sacramento. Thanks for helping set up before the meeting and cleaning up afterwards. For addition information, please contact Vice President Bill Staehlin: 916 216-1753 and bill.staehlin@sbcglobal.net.
